“Looks like someone is getting engaged…we better get out of here!”
Courtney Boreen couldn’t believe she was getting engaged. It wasn’t the usual excitement and surprise—she actually asked the man proposing to her, Jamie Bloor, if he was kidding.
Bride's name: Courtney Boreen
Groom's name: Jamie Bloor
Proposal Location: Fairmont Hot Springs
Proposal Date: March 22, 2022
The couple had recently bought their second home together in Cranbrook. Both originally from the East Kootenays, they already owned a place in Sparwood, which was closer to Jamie’s work.
They met online in 2015 and had a first date that’s typical for Kootenay kids—hanging out at Tim Hortons followed by a bush cruise. Since then, they've shared many important milestones together.
“It only took seven years, two houses and two kids before he had decided to pop the question,” said Courtney, “so I was so oblivious and in shock.”
Runaway fiance (almost)
It was spring break for the couple’s oldest daughter, so the family had decided to enjoy a getaway to Fairmont Hot Springs. Jamie’s mom and her partner had come along, and the crew decided to go for a bit of a hike.
They crested a hill, coming to a lookout spot, which is when Courtney saw rose petals, champagne, and candles.
It still felt like any other day to Courtney. Everyone was tired from staying in a hotel room with two young kids.
“Looks like someone is getting engaged,” said Courtney. “We better get out of here!”
The others on the hike were able to convince her to take a look around since nobody was in sight.
“Being who I am, I was half out of the area because I didn’t want to ruin someone’s surprise,” she said “I was still clueless. I looked quick and said something like ‘that’s cool’ and tried to dash again.”
Yes, you!
Jamie grabbed her hand. Courtney turned around to find him on one knee, and that’s when she asked him if he was joking. He pulled out a ring from Jewels on Ninth and asked Courtney if she would marry him.
It clicked for Courtney when she saw the ring, and she knew Jamie was serious. She said yes, and the couple added their engagement to the list of things they have accomplished together.
Only then did she hear cheering from the bushes, and realized that other family members had been watching from the sidelines.
